Of Mice & Men

Assigment

Before we begin reading Of Mice and Men, you will work in small groups to complete a research presentation that will help us to better understand the time period in which the story takes place and people involved in the story.  This basic knowledge will be important to your understanding of the context of the story.

Your Assignment

The Research: In your groups, you will research some element involved in the novel.  Using the Internet, books, and databases your group should compile any information that is interesting and important to your topic.  Make sure to take notes and get some pictures.  You will have class time to work, but make sure to use it wisely!

The Final Product: After you have compiled your group’s research, you will create a visual and an oral presentation on your topic.  Your visual and presentation should contain enough information for your classmates and I to understand your topic and its importance to the people or time period of this novel.  In other words, YOU are the teacher and need to impart your knowledge.

Specifics on the Visual:

Your visual can take a few different forms – a poster, brochure, or slideshow, for example.  Whichever visual you choose, make it interesting and attractive as well as informative.  Do not overwhelm the audience with too much writing – put enough to get the point across while still making the product pleasing to the eye.

Specifics on the Oral Presentation:

Your oral presentation should be 5-10 minutes.  DO NOT simply read from your visual – it’s boring for the audience.  Make some notes on paper or cards to help you out.  You also need to make sure that all members of the group are involved in the oral presentation.

Other Considerations:

Each student is responsible for obtaining THREE resources, and turning in notes that contain bibliographic information

You must include a properly formatted MLA bibliography of all resources.  In other words, a compilation of all group resources (in alphabetical order)

Your visual should include written and visual information (words and pictures)

All group members should share the work

If you create a brochure, or other small product, you must provide copies to all classmates (I can copy these for you, but that means that you need to get them to me a day early)

Each group must use at least one book, one website, and one database (individuals may use the same resources, but the group must have one of each)

Topics:

Your visual and presentation should address all of the questions associated with your topic which are provided in the tabs on the left.
