Reconstruction & Jim Crow Laws: Your Assignment

Header

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

The Thirteen, Fourteen, and Fifteenth Amendments, also known as the reconstruction  amendments, changed the rights of newly freed black people across the south, in theory. You will be researching one of these amendments and how Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws prevented these amendments from fulfilling their purpose.

DIRECTIONS:

In this project you will:

  1. Explain how the Civil War led to the passage of your amendment. You need to give evidence of how the Civil War led directly to the passage of the amendment.
  2. What the amendment states in your own words. Explain what was the original intent of the amendment.
  3. Find three Black Codes and or Jim Crow Laws that allowed the amendment to be ignored, misunderstood, and abused, and how long they were allowed to be kept in place.
  4. Focus on one of the three codes/laws you researched. You will then  find the legal case that overturned the Black Code/Jim Crow Law. You need to explain the case to your classmates. What was the major argument that the law in question was unconstitutional, how did the Supreme Court vote. How did this change how the amendment in question was legally viewed.

Presentation:

  1. Each group will present their findings to the class.

  2. This can be a slideshow, poster, diorama, or a comic strip. If you have a different idea you can present that to me and I will let you know if you can do it.

  3. Each presentation has to have at least 5 visual aids (photos/drawings) and 1 video aid

  4. Bibliography in Chicago Format
